Sewage/Wastewater treatment is the process of removing contaminants from sewage and wastewater to produce an effluent that can be safely discharged into the environment or reused with minimal impact. This includes water from everyday domestic activities such as toilet flushing, bathing, laundry, dishwashing, and general household use.

Once treated, the liquid is released, while solid waste—also known as treated sludge—remains in the treatment tank and must be periodically removed by a licensed waste disposal provider.

In most of the UK, domestic wastewater is discharged to the public sewer and processed by municipal treatment facilities. However, in rural areas or where access to mains drainage is not feasible, properties must manage their own wastewater. This is typically done through one of three systems: cesspits, septic tanks, or wastewater treatment plants.

Of these, wastewater treatment plants offer the highest quality of effluent discharge, using mechanical and biological processes to treat wastewater. These systems involve specialised equipment that requires regular maintenance to ensure compliance and reliable performance.
