What is Rainwater Harvesting?
Rainwater harvesting is simply the process of collecting, storing and reusing rainwater. Rain can be collected from your roof and directed to a tank rather than flowing down the drainpipes and into the gutters. The water can then be reused in your home and garden for things such as flushing toilets, washing machines, garden irrigation and car washing.
The rainwater is filtered before entering the tank to catch any unwanted debris such as leaves and moss from the roof and drainpipes.
Why?
Around half of the water we use per day is not needed for drinking. When you consider the amount of energy and resource that goes into filtering, treating and pumping water to each house, it is a huge waste to see that water being used for toilets flushes and watering of a garden!
Rainwater harvesting can counteract this and protect the environment whilst also potentially reducing your water bills by approximately 50%. As a sustainable energy source it can also be viewed more favorably in planning applications, reduce the amount of detergent needed and benefiting your home further by providing limescale free water for washing machines and toilets reducing breakdowns and problems.
