What is Wastewater Treatment?

Wastewater treatment is the process which removes and eliminates contaminants from wastewater or sewage and converts this into an effluent that can be returned to the water cycle with minimum impact on the environment or it can directly be reused.

Wastewater is the water used in everyday activities such as toilet flushes, bathing and showering, washing machines and dishwashes and all other sinks. The water is then treated and released and the solid waste/ treated sludge remains in the treatment tank where it can be removed by a waste disposal company.

For the majority of the UK domestic wastewater is connected to and treated by municipal treatment works. However, due to the rural location of some dwelling and with more housing being built in urban areas it is not always possible to connect to the main wastewater treatment network. Where this is not possible, a property/s will need to trat their own waste. Private wastewater can be managed in one of three means- cesspit, septic tanks or wastewater treatment plants.

Wastewater treatment plants use various processes in order to achieve a better quality of discharge effluent. These processes use equipment which must be regularly maintained.
